(Japanese) You know, well, I look back now on those times and… you know how people talk about their motherland, or homeland, right? Well, let’s see, of course that has to be my six, seven years spent in the US—the six or seven years after being born there, right? But then I went to Japan, and went through elementary and junior high school there. So there’s this, you know, the education, the environment that I grew up in and such [in Japan]. So actually, if asked whether identify myself as American or Japanese—at the time, I’d have to say that I saw myself as Japanese, and didn’t consciously identify as being an American.

…It’s called dual-citizenship—I had both American citizenship and Japanese citizenship. So the Japanese would say to me, “You’re American,” but since coming to Japan and living here, I felt, and my mother likewise felt, that we would never really be going “back” to America. I think we had a stronger feeling toward completely identifying ourselves as Japanese.

Henry Eiichi Suto nació el 5 de febrero de 1928 en North Dakota, de padres Isseis. Tras la muerte de su padre y su hermana menor, su madre regresó a Japón con Henry y su hermano. Henry tenía 7 años y sabía muy poco hablar japonés. Se esforzó en aprender el idioma y ser aceptado por sus compañeros. A los 17 años cuando su maestro le recomendó alistarse en el ejército japonés, él aceptó porque sabía alistándose no tenía que pagar para ir a la universidad. Luego de un entrenamiento básico, fue 1 de los 34 seleccionados para ser entrenado en una unidad especial que luego supo que era la unidad “suicida” del buque torpedero. Estaba en esta unidad cuando Hiroshima fue atacada por la bomba y fue uno de los primeros soldados en arribar con ayuda después de 36 horas que cayera la bomba.

Regresó a los Estados Unidos después que fuera liberado de sus tareas en el ejército y estudió en Los Angeles City College donde se especializó en comercio exterior. Trabajó en Otagiri Company hasta su retiro en 1993.

Murió el 17 de octubre de 2008 a la edad de los 80 años. (30 de enero de 2009)
