Well occupation force in Japan – that was…it was a wonderful thing that MacArthur did. Number one, he had a good grip on people’s…he used armed forces but he also…Japanese government and even the Emperor, so there were no major riot to speak of. Everything was under control. And after I was discharged from the Japanese Army. And then I start working for occupation force in Japan and a very good life in American way of living and…not much cultural things, but a lot of time I was able to stay in camp – a living quarter that I was provided. So it was a very clean, nice living and then I start thinking, “Hey, you know, this is wonderful. Being American, this is wonderful.”

Henry Eiichi Suto nació el 5 de febrero de 1928 en North Dakota, de padres Isseis. Tras la muerte de su padre y su hermana menor, su madre regresó a Japón con Henry y su hermano. Henry tenía 7 años y sabía muy poco hablar japonés. Se esforzó en aprender el idioma y ser aceptado por sus compañeros. A los 17 años cuando su maestro le recomendó alistarse en el ejército japonés, él aceptó porque sabía alistándose no tenía que pagar para ir a la universidad. Luego de un entrenamiento básico, fue 1 de los 34 seleccionados para ser entrenado en una unidad especial que luego supo que era la unidad “suicida” del buque torpedero. Estaba en esta unidad cuando Hiroshima fue atacada por la bomba y fue uno de los primeros soldados en arribar con ayuda después de 36 horas que cayera la bomba.

Regresó a los Estados Unidos después que fuera liberado de sus tareas en el ejército y estudió en Los Angeles City College donde se especializó en comercio exterior. Trabajó en Otagiri Company hasta su retiro en 1993.

Murió el 17 de octubre de 2008 a la edad de los 80 años. (30 de enero de 2009)
