全国有数の「移民の県」として知られている沖縄県。第2次世界大戦以前から、多くの移民を海外へ送り出してきました。移民数・海外在住者数は、全国でも一番です。移民した沖縄県人らは、海外で自らのコミュニティを築きつつ、世界のネットワークを通して沖縄との絆を深めてきました。 2006年10月、沖縄県那覇市に21カ国から約4900人が第4回世界ウチナーンチュウ大会へ参加するために集まりました。ウチナーンチュウ大会は、世界各地に広がる移民とその子孫－ウチナーンチュウ(沖縄県系人）－が沖縄へ戻ることで、彼らの祖先の文化や伝統に触れ、原点であるアイデンティティを確認。さらには、世界に広がるウチナーネットワークの継承といった幅広い交流を目指すとてもユニークなイベントです。 大会開催中、琉球大学移民研究センターは、沖縄系の人々の国境を越えたネットワークについて、大会参加者を対象にアンケート調査を行い、約800名の方から回答を集めました。 ディスカバー・ニッケイでは、この調査結果を皆さんにも知っていただこうと、琉球大学移民研究センターの教授3名をお招きし、カリフォルニア州ロサンゼルス市の全米日系人博物館でその調査結果を発表していただきました。 発表後、北米沖縄県人会の山内優子さん、サンフランシスコ州立大学のウェスリー・上運天（うえうんてん）さんのコメントをもって、ウチナーンチュウアイデンティティや次世代へ文化・ネットワークのの継承等について、プログラム参加者と共に意見交換を行いました。 プログラム終了後、カリフォルニア大学ロサンゼルス校のLane R.
