This is a photo of the Little Tokyo Historic District on the north side of First Street facing west. The building in the foreground with the "Chop Suey" sign is the Far East Building. Los Angeles City Hall is visible in the background to the northwest. This photo was taken in May of 2005, after major renovations to the Far East Building, but prior to the re-opening of the storied restaurant. Built around the turn of the 20th century, the building survived many changes in Los Angeles until the Northridge earthquake of 1994. The building was closed for nearly 10 years until the Mar family donated it to the Little Tokyo Service Center Community Development Corporation, which undertook the restoration process.
