Talk by Yayoi Hirano
Long before the emergence of Kabuki, there was already a long-established tradition of different performing art styles in Japan including Gagaku, Sarugaku, and Kagura. With a grant from the Canadian Council for the Arts, dancer Yayoi Hirano conducted research into Japan’s dance history from 800-1800 and traveled along the Japan Sea coast to meet dancers and watch performances. She will share the fruits of her research in this fascinating talk.
