Art Center
He [Larry Shinoda] always had a penchant for drawing but he did a lot of hands-on things too. So I think drawing was just an outgrowth of his, you know, hands-on approach to making things and doing things. Obviously he had a pre-disposure to automotive stuff so I think that just went hand in hand.
So he never really talked about the youth experience, only when he went to Art Center because I was very interesting in the Art Center thing because Art Center is such a famous automotive, you know, for it’s automotive college, the design portion of the college. And then when he told me that he actually got kicked out of Art Center, I thought that was pretty interesting too. So he’s probably one of the most famous non-graduating alumni of Art Center College.
I*: Did he ever say why he got kicked out?
He never really got into the why’s. It was just mainly that he didn’t fit in. And that was kind of Larry’s, I think, whole life. It was just being the outside of the box all the time and I think that’s caused the real problem there. But he never really discussed the actual reasons; but it was mainly just because he didn’t fit in.
