This is a picture of a doormat of my neighbor. In the middle of the doormat, it says “yasu/an;” “yasu” means cheap, and “an” means relief or a piece of mind. Many Westerners buy products with Chinese characters on them without realizing what they mean. This neighbor asked me what that character meant. After I told my neighbor what it stood for, she said, “Oh, I didn’t know that! But after knowing what it means, I love it! It may help me relieve my stress before I step into my room!” This neighbor, without giving any second thought, seemed to be happier about the doormat, especially after knowing what it means. “A piece of mind,” where she will be stepping on it everyday. Not only are some of the commodities that are made in America thoughtless, but the consumers who buy them can be thoughtless, as well.
