Discover Nikkei Community Collage - May 2009

Licensing

Discover Nikkei presented a special activity during the closing reception at the Imagined Futures Conference presented by the Aratani Endowed Chair, UCLA, and the Japanese American National Museum.

The one-day conference included keynote addresses by Eric Nakamura of Giant Robot and actor George Takei, and workshops by established artists on filmmaking, anime/comics, blogs/new media, spoken word/hip-hop, fiction, and the art & business of clothes.

Participants were invited to help create the collage by sharing a picture, text, or item around themes of community and identity. They then posted their contributions to our collage themselves. Our own real-time board/wall to share something with our community.

Although the limited time period meant that we weren't able to get a large number of contributions to our collage, there were some very interesting postings. This collection presents a sampling of some of the contributions.

Thanks to all who participated!

Getting started

We set up our Community Collage space in the lobby of the National Center for the Preservation of Democracy, which is part of the Japanese American National Museum's campus.

This is where the opening program was held, as well as a couple of the workshops, and the closing reception.
