Nancy Oda—who grew up in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Boyle Heights—shares her experiences as a Japanese American girl residing in this diverse community and living alongside Jewish and Hispanic Americans. She relates the story of how her father (who had been born in the U.S. but the family returned to their home country) came back to the United States from Japan and ran a Judo school and a market. She also describes how he and his family were interned at Tule Lake camp during World War II, but managed to hold on to their home and return there after the war.
