Yumiko Hashimoto
Born in Kobe city of the Hyogo prefecture, she has lived in Los Angeles since 1997. Works as an editor for a Nikkei Community paper, and also writes articles based on local happenings. When she was in Japan, she had never even heard of the word “Nikkei-jin,” let alone the existence of internment camps during World War II. She is participating in the Discover Nikkei site in hopes that the readers can “keep the existence of Nikkei people close to their hearts and minds.”

On June 7th and 8th, the Los Angeles Grand Sumo Tour was held for the first time in 27 years at the Los Angeles Sports Arena. A total of 20,000 spectators came to watch Japan's national sport over the two days, cheering loudly as the wrestlers clashed in front of them in person. 前回のコラムで クリスティ・ヤマグチがセレブリティ社交ダンス番組「Dancing with the Stars」で大健闘していることをお伝えしたが、５月27日の最終回で見事優勝。「男性に比べ目立つことが難しい」（審査員キャリーアン・イナバ談）と 言われるダンスにおいて、第１シーズン以来、実に６年ぶりの女性優勝となった。 クリスティやキャリーアンのように、こちらのテレビでも日系人セレブの姿をしばしば見かける（中国・韓国系はもっと多い）。その筆頭格には全米日系 人博物館の前理事長でもある、日系２世のアクター、ジョージ・タケイ氏が上がるだろう。「スタートレック」のスルー（日本ではカトー）役で全米に知られる ようになったのが、1960年代の後半。他にも「ハワイアン・アイ」「トワイライトゾーン」「スパイ大作戦」など日本でも放送されたテレビドラマに数多く ゲスト出演。最近では「ウィル＆グレイス」や「ＨＥＲＯＥＳ」に特別ゲスト／準レギュラーで登場、アメリカだけでなく、日本にも再びその存在感を知らしめ ている。 余談になるが、５月にカリフォルニア州最高裁で同性婚が容認、タケイ氏も長年のパートナー、ブレット・アルトマン氏との婚約を発表した。人気女性 トークショーホストのエレン・デジェネレスも同時にパートナーの女性と婚約したのだが、タケイ氏とエレンは、この同性婚の“アイコン”的存在として全米で 注目を浴びている。 話が前後するが、そのタケイ氏が４月にバラエティ番組「Secret Talents of the Stars」（ＣＢＳ）に主役級の扱いで出演した。タケイ氏はカントリー歌手に一日入門、芝居のように易々とはいかなかったが、ステージで習ったばかりの カントリーソングを披露していた。この番組で驚いたのは、タケイ氏がカントリーとの出合いとして、日系人強制収容所時代のタケイ一家の写真を見せたこと だ。 「私とカントリーミュージックとの出合いは、強制収容所の鉄条網の中でした。あるとき、両親がラジオを持ってきたのです、そこで流れていたのがカントリーミュージックでした」 保存用にきれいにコピーされた収容所の写真を公開するタケイ氏。アメリカのバラエティ番組で収容所のバラック小屋の写真を見たのは初めてのこと。 ニュースやドキュメンタリーなら別だが、まさかバラエティ番組で見るなんて、今のアメリカでは考えもしないことである。タケイ氏のスターパワーがなせる技 なのだろう。 放送から数日後、偶然タケイ氏に会う機会があり、「（収容所の写真には）驚きましたよ」と声をかけた。タケイ氏は「どうしても見せたかったのです。 だから出演を引き受けたのですよ」。メディアの使い方を熟知した、さすが大ベテラン。同時にその“Japanese American”としてのプライドにはいたく感銘した。 日系コミュニティへの協力を惜しまない、ハリウッドの日系人セレブには、タケイ氏の他、タムリン・トミタ（「ベストキッド２」「24」）、若手のケ イコ・アゲナ（「ギルモアガールズ」）、マイク・シノダ（ロックバンド・リンキンパーク）、さらに昨年亡くなったマコ（「パールハーバー」）らが思い浮か ぶ。すべての日系人セレブが、日系コミュニティに友好的なわけではない。日系とは距離を置き、白人社会ばかりにしか目がいかない人もいるらしい。誰なのか は分からないけれど…。 戦前の早川雪舟に始まる日系人のハリウッドでの活躍。雪舟もＬＡリトル東京で芝居を見たのが、ハリウッド入りするきっかけであったと言われるくら い、日系社会と彼らの縁は深い。派手やかな彼らは、コミュニティの花であり、活気を与えてくれる。タケイ氏に続く、コミュニティに協力的な日系人セレブの 出現に期待したい。そして私たちコミュニティの一員も、彼らを応援したいものだ。
