NYU Alum and 2012 Student Academy Award Winner Keiko Wright screens HIRO – A Story of Japanese Internment , a moving documentary exploring her grandfather’s experience in Heart Mountain during World War II. 2012-13 A/P/A Artist-in-Residence Roger Shimomura joins Wright to discuss the role of historical memory in the creative process. G.W. (Greg) Kimura , the President/CEO of the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles, California, leads the discussion.

Roger Shimomura ’s paintings, prints, and theatre pieces address sociopolitical issues of ethnicity. He was born in Seattle, Washington and spent two years of his early childhood in Minidoka (Idaho), one of ten concentration camps for Japanese Americans during World War II. He has had over 135 solo exhibitions of paintings and prints, and has presented his experimental theatre pieces at such venues as the Franklin Furnace in New York City, Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, and The Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC. He is the recipient of more than 30 grants, of which four are National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships in Painting and Performance Art. Shimomura has taught at the University of Kansas, where he was designated a University Distinguished Professor (1994), and Carleton College. He is the recipient of awards from the College Art Association, Seattle Urban League, Kansas Governor’s Office, Asian American Arts Alliance, University of Washington, and, in 2011, was designated a United States Artist Fellow. Shimomura is the 2012-13 A/P/A Artist-in-Residence.

Keiko Wright is a Chicago-born filmmaker. In 2011, she graduated from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts where she received a Bachelor in Fine Arts with a concentration in film and television post-production. She has directed and produced several short-form documentaries. Her most recent film, HIRO – A Story of Japanese Internment , is a 2012 Student Academy Award Winner.

G. W. (Greg) Kimura , Ph.D. is the Japanese American National Museum’s President and Chief Executive Officer and immediate past president and CEO of the Alaskan Humanities Forum (Alaska’s state humanities council). Dr. Kimura has an extensive academic background as a department head and professor with a Masters in Divinity from Harvard University and a Ph.D. in philosophy of religion from Cambridge University.
