Part 2 of 3 from the Q & A portion of the Discover Nikkei program, “Kenjinkai: Past, Present, and Future,” on March 28, 2009 at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles, CA. The Q & A was moderated by Professor Lane Ryo Hirabayashi with panelists Margaret Miyauchi-Leong, Arlene Nakamura, Dean Hara, and Ken Mukai. A Yamaguchi Kenjinkai member shares his thoughts and reactions to the program of what the Kenjinkai needs to do to address issues of younger people’s disinterest; explore what the Kenjinkai offers to people, suggest a regular Kenjinkai council meeting for younger people, and especially to have meetings in English. Hara, Nakamura, and Mukai talk about the need to coordinate activities that will attract younger people, and the need for different Kenjinkai groups to work together. Miyauchi-Leong talks about the advantage that Kenjinkai have are their close ties to the prefectural governments in Japan.
