Little Tokyo Community Profiles

Uyeda Department Store (Satoru with Maneki Neko and Daruma)

Published: March 25, 2009 Modified: March 4, 2025

Occidental College students Guilberto Moran and Alexander Kaplan-Reyes profile the Uyeda Department Store in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles, CA. -- This is Satoru Ueda standing at the front counter with several Maneki Neko and Daruma dolls. The Maneki Neko is a good luck charm and the Daruma doll is a wish doll. The Maneki Neko with the left paw raised--as is the case with all the cats in the picture--is thought to bring in customers.
