Tom and Kaz Nishio Interview at Toronto JCCC

Community Event
In Person
Toronto
6 Garamond Court Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Date: Oct. 22, 2011

Time: 1 p.m. – 3 p.m.

Norm Ibuki will interview two Nisei, Tom and Kaz Nishio at the Toronto Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre on Saturday, October 22nd in the Heritage Lounge, at 1 pm. The Nishio brothers were born and raised in the Kitsilano area of Vancouver, British Columbia. Their father, Ippei (Gifu-ken) was a successful textile wholesaler before World War Two. The family was forced to move to the "self supporting" town of Bridge River, B.C. during the infamous internment years. In 1941-42 Tom was a University of British Columbia student and star rugby player until his family joined the mass expulsion of 21,000 other innocent Japanese Canadians who were labeled "enemy aliens". After WW2, Kaz and his father (and later Tom) became the exclusive Canadian distributors for Mikasa tableware. Please join us for what is certain to be a fascinating talk with two Nisei who have done so much for the Canadian Nikkei community.
