Chile

Date: Oct. 3, 2010

On October 3, the ceremony of handing over 50 cherry blossom trees (sakura) from the Nikkei Corporation of Valparaiso Region (CNV) to the National Botanical Garden Foundation of Viña del Mar took place, as a gift to the people of Chile, on the occasion of the Bicentennial of this country. The ceremony took place in the "La Laguna" sector of the Botanical Garden, where His Excellency Ambassador of Japan, Mr. Wataru Hayashi, the Minister of Agriculture, Mr. José Antonio Galilea, local authorities, members of the CNV and friends of Japanese culture attended. The handover was made by the President of the CNV, Mr. Roberto Hirose and received by the National Botanical Garden Foundation, its Executive Secretary, Mr. Juan Pablo Reyes Morandé. This donation marks the first step of a long-awaited project by the Botanical Garden, which consists of the construction of a Japanese Garden on a vast area around the Lagoon, where the Sakura were planted.
