Free Admission Day at Portland Japanese Garden

Community Event
In Person
Portland Japanese Garden
above Washington Park 611 SW Kingston Drive Portland, Oregon, United States of America

Date: Nov. 11, 2009

Time: 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

The Portland Japanese Garden will be hosting their fall Free Admission Day on Veterans Day, November 11, Wednesday from 10am-4pm-generously sponsored by KOIN Local 6. In addition to sharing the lovely fall Garden with the community, the event will also benefit Janus Youth Programs through the collection of voluntary donations at the Admission Gate. All members of the community are invited to come and visit the Garden on this Free Admission Day.

"KOIN Local 6 Early is proud and excited to be a part of Free Admission Day at the Portland Japanese Garden," said Art Edwards, KOIN's anchor. "It's a great opportunity for families to spend some valuable time together and help local programs at the same time."

As part of Free Admission Day, the Garden will be accepting voluntary donations to the Janus Youth Program, a Portland non-profit which provides two shelters for homeless youth. The shelters provide a safe place to stay for 60 youth each night and are always filled to capacity. The following items are always in high demand:

·        socks
·        dental floss
·        toothbrushes
·        small sewing kits
·        stocking caps

Visitors will also be treated to the Garden's winter Art in the Garden Exhibition: The Bontei Tray Gardens of Marc Peter Keane, featuring exquisitely designed, handcrafted wood and stone tray gardens by one of the world's leading experts on Japanese gardens. Admission to the exhibition is free as well.

The Portland Japanese Garden has been proclaimed by his Excellency Nobuo Matsunaga, former Ambassador to Japan, to be "the most beautiful and authentic Japanese garden in the world outside of Japan." The Garden is above Washington Park at 611 SW Kingston Drive in SW Portland, Oregon. The Garden is open daily except on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's. Hours are 10am-4pm October 1-March 31, and 10am-7pm April 1-September 30.
