Master Danilo "Baikyo" Tomic continues his season of shakuhachi (bamboo flute) performances at the Japanese Pavilion, performing the entirety of "Honkyoku", a collection of 36 classic pieces for solo shakuhachi. The next concert will take place on Saturday, June 28, starting at 4:00 p.m., and will feature a special appearance by "Baikyoku" Tsuna Iwami. The event is being promoted by the Brazilian Society of Japanese Culture and Social Welfare (Bunkyo), through the Japanese Pavilion Administration Committee, in honor of the Centennial Year of Japanese Immigration. This time, the performance will feature a special appearance by "Baikyoku" Tsuna Iwami, 85 years old, Danilo Tomic's master and Iemoto (title granted to the Principal Master) of Kinkoryu Shakuhachi (a style founded 400 years ago). Admission to the recital is free, with only an entrance fee to the Japanese Pavilion (R$3). The performances will run until November. The shakuhachi is a bamboo flute that was originally played only by monks in the temples of the Zen Buddhist sect 'Fuke'. After centuries of this exclusive practice, the instrument began to be played outside the temples, along with other instruments, becoming, along with the 'koto' and the 'shamisen', one of the main instruments of Japanese classical music. Honkyoku Around five hundred years ago, a monk traveled around Japan collecting the various melodies that were taught to shakuhachi practitioners in the temples, giving rise to the 'honkyoku', a collection of 36 pieces for solo shakuhachi, with a strongly meditative character and quite peculiar aesthetics. Its composition dates back, in some cases, to the 8th century. Danilo Tomic studied musicology, composition and conducting in São Paulo (USP) and Berlin. He has been studying shakuhachi since 1989 with Sensei 'Baikyoku' Iwami. He received his master's degree in shakuhachi from him in 1998, when he was named 'Baikyo'. He has performed regularly for several years in Brazil and abroad, playing at important Japanese classical music and contemporary music events. He has composed several works for shakuhachi in combination with other Western instruments and with other languages, such as dance, theater and cinema. Being Brazilian and having learned the art of shakuhachi entirely in Brazil, the musician believes he is a true representative of the integration of both cultures.
