Mary Nell Turner
Mary Nell Carter Turner foi aluna de Joe Hill no Henderson State Teachers College (HSTC) durante o final dos anos 1930 e início dos anos 1940. Durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial, seu marido McDowell Turner serviu no Pacific Theatre na Nova Guiné e nas Filipinas, enquanto Mary Nell ficou para trás e trabalhou no HSTC.
Após a guerra, o casal voltou para sua cidade natal, Hope, Arkansas, onde ela lecionou por 28 anos e ele trabalhou para os Correios dos EUA. Eles criaram duas filhas, Ellen Turner e Susan Turner Purvis, que foi professora mestre no projeto "Life Interrupted" do Museu Nacional Nipo-Americano.
Aos 90 anos ela continua pesquisando e escrevendo artigos sobre a história local. Na primavera passada, Mary Nell matriculou-se na faculdade comunitária local, onde abriu caminho em suas aulas de história no Arkansas.

Joseph Wallace Hill graduated from Henderson State Teachers College (now Henderson State University) in Arkadelphia, Arkansas in May, 1942, as did I. Our class was small because most of the young men had either been drafted or enlisted in a branch of the Service. Joe was a first lieutenant in the Reserve Officers Training Corps at the college, as were several other graduates and did not report for duty until June 1, 1942, and so they “got to walk” in …
