The San Francisco International Arts Festival (SFIAF), YUBIWA Hotel & U.S./Japan Cultural Trade Network present a work-in-progress showing of "Mesujika DOE" a Japanese/English bilingual play co-written and co-directed by an internationally recognized young Japanese woman playwright/director, Shirotama Hitsujiya, and an award winning American playwright, Trista Baldwin.
"Mesujika DOE" is a cross-cultural research project on women's issues as well as a play. Building on Baldwin's original concept, the play pushes the theme of mutable identity and sexuality from a cross-cultural perspective into a new realm by incorporating insights and inspiration gained in Japan and the U.S. from workshops and field research on immigrant women through round table discussions, site-visits and interviews. "Mesujika DOE" sheds new light on various issues behind the struggles of language and national identity as well as on universal issues of gender, sexuality, family, children, society and culture.
