Danju Kariyushi: A journey through the history of the Okinawan people through music, dance and taiko

Presented by Hawaii Taiko Kai and Ukwanshin Kabudan

Tickets: $25 presale, $30 at door (call 808.497.4208 or email ukwanshinkabudan@gmail.com for tickets)

"Danju Kariyushi" is a folk song that has been used for centuries to send loved ones off on a safe journey. Though sung with a heavy heart, the lyrics speak nothing of the sorrows of parting, but only of joyful aspirations and anticipation of a safe return. Thus, "Danju Kariyushi" embodies not only the optimism and resilience of the Uchinanchu spirit, but also on invitation to all to "return home" to their roots, no matter where their journeys have taken them.

In this spirit we present to you our concert by the same name. Incorporating theater with Okinawan music, dance and taiko, we will recount key events in Uchinanchu history from the Satsuma invasion in 1609 through the establishment of the Hawaii community. Through this presentation, we hope to share with you not only the struggles of our people to maintain our identity and pride, but also a celebration of our culture that has endured centuries of hardship and traveled across the sea to establish firm roots in Hawaii. Please join us as we recount the journey of our people.
