Kusaki-zome are fabrics dyed with plant juices extracted from flowers, leaves, stems and roots, giving it a soft, subtle color contrast.  The dyeing method of kusaki-zome was practiced in Japan until around 1925.  It can now be thought of as an organic, eco-friendly alternative to chemical dye.  Setsuko Hayashi will lead students through this ancient dyeing technique using three different dyes made from onion skins, pomegranates, and loquat leaves creating artistically dyed scarves.  There is a $25 fee that includes a silk scarf and other materials.  To register for the workshop or for further information, please contact the JCI at info@jci-gardena.org or call (310) 324-6611.  Pre-registration is required by July 2nd.  There is a maximum of 30 students, so please register early.
