Group History
Describe how, where, and why the ensemble was founded. What was its inspiration?

Makoto Taiko was founded in 1999 by Steven Tokunaga and later developed under the leadership of Grammy Award-winning taiko master, Koji Nakamura.

With membership open to the community at large, Makoto Taiko continously expands in diversity and number with an average of 60 members from all over the Los Angeles area.

Makoto Taiko performs at an ever-expanding list of events and venues throughout the United States including the Prayer Vigil for the Earth in Washington D.C., the Catskill Mountain Cultural Festival in New York, the Cathedral of the Lady of Angels in downtown Los Angeles, the residence of the Consulate-General of Japan in Los Angeles, the United States Martial Arts Festival at the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center, the 2013 Nisei Week Taiko Gathering and many more. The group has also performed in Japan over the summer of 2012 in collaboration with local groups in Osaka and Yokohama.
