Two days before Friday, instead of classes, the students put on a special performance of songs, dances, and plays for …

Exploring the meaning of "JAPA"

April 8, 2015 • Laura Honda-Hasegawa

I believe words are living things. When people's way of thinking and living changes, words also change. About 60 years ago, when I was a child, there were very few Japanese people living in the city of São Paulo, so "Japanese" people stood out in many ways. I still remember that at that time, most Brazilians had a unique image of Japanese people, such as "They don't understand Portuguese," "The food is different," and "They have strange customs." Since I …

But I didn't really understand why it was called "ash." I thought Brazil was a different …

January 26, 2009 Why? Why do you have to go back to Brazil? Hey, is it true? I asked Mommy, but she was busy cleaning up in the kitchen. Unusually, she didn't say, "Jessica, help out too." I really don't want to go back! Mommy told me, "You'll be a junior high school student next year, so you should study English more." Mommy taught English at the Brazilian school I went to. But she suddenly decided to go back to …

Hiroyuki steeled himself and told Sanae the truth. He told her that while he was a student in Brazil, he had a child and moved in with the child's mother, Maria do Rosario, and that two years later, he came to Japan alone to work. "I'll come over there next time!" the words of his wife, whom he had left behind in Brazil, rang in his ears. At first he thought she was joking, but Maria do Rosario was serious. "I told you before! I'd follow you to Japan! The time has come." Hiroyuki was confused. Until now, his wife had only called for one reason. …

July 30, 2014 • Laura Honda-Hasegawa
