On Saturday, June 8, the Okinawa Association of America (OAA) will host a secondhand book sale to raise funds for the organization’s library. A number of lightly used English books and some Japanese books will be available at great prices. Highlights include classic novels, mystery and romance novels, children's books, and older editions (Note: The majority of items are not Okinawa-focused). There will also be vinyl records and baked snacks for sale.
Development for the OAA’s Charles M. and Yoshiko Kamiya Library began in 2001. It has since become the only one of its kind in the greater Los Angeles area, hosting a rare collection of Japanese and English language materials focusing on the Okinawan culture, history, and diaspora. The space is also used for the organization’s weekly computer classes for senior citizens. Access to the library and computer classes are benefits of the OAA’s annual membership.
OAA Librarian Monica Solis and a small group of volunteers are leading the fundraising efforts for much-needed renovations and repairs. Their weekly activities include organizing the collection, cleaning books and LPs, and building a library database.
The fundraiser will take place on June 8, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., in the OAA Center’s parking lot. The OAA Center is located at 16500 S. Western Ave., Gardena 90247. All sales are final (no refunds). For more information, please contact the OAA: 310-532-1929, oaalibrary@gmail.com
