BEGIN:VCALENDAR VERSION:2.0 PRODID:-//PYVOBJECT//NONSGML Version 1//EN BEGIN:VEVENT UID:events.uid.1356@www.discovernikkei.org DTSTART:20070428T000000Z DTEND:20070428T000000Z DESCRIPTION:FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE\nApril 5\, 2007\n\n38th ANNUAL MANZANAR P ILGRIMAGE SCHEDULED FOR APRIL 28\n\n“One Life...a Legacy for All\,” is the theme for the 38th annual Manzanar Pilgrimage\, sponsored by the <a h ref="http://www.manzanarcommittee.org">Manzanar Committee</a>\, which will be held on Saturday\, April 28\, 2007 at the <a href="http://www.nps.gov/ manz">Manzanar National Historic Site</a>.\n\nThis year’s event will hon or the dedication\, fighting spirit and the legacy left by Sue Kunitomi Em brey\, who passed away in May\, 2006.\n\nEmbrey\, who was interned at Manz anar during World War II\, was the former chair of the Manzanar Committee and was a founder of the Manzanar Pilgrimage. She was also the driving for ce behind the movement to create the Manzanar National Historic Site.\n\n “Sue was very angry [about being interned]\,” said Rose Ochi\, a forme r chair of the Manzanar National Historic Site Advisory Commission in a re cent interview with the Ball State University Electronic Field Trips progr am. “But she took the anger and it fueled a lifetime dedicated to make c ertain that this story\, this very tragic episode in this country’s hist ory\, be memorialized in order to ensure that it would never happen to any group again.”\n\n“She used her anger to be a springboard for action\, ” added Ochi. “And it fueled her to be a champion for change.”\n\nTh e program begins at noon at the Manzanar cemetery site and will feature va rious speakers who will talk about their work with Embrey and their memori es of her.\n\nThe day’s events will also feature UCLA’s <a href="http: //www.studentgroups.ucla.edu/kyodo">Kyodo Taiko</a>\, bagpipe player Dan S prague\, and folk singer Ken Koshio.
