The handmade Hinamatsuri set was created by Tomi Kusumi for the March 3, 1943 Girl’s Day at the Amache concentration camp. When faced with forced removal to Santa Anita in 1942, Tomi carried with her crochet yarn among the few possessions she was permitted to take. A teacher of a crocheting class at Santa Anita Assembly Center and later at Amache, Colorado. This photo is an original photograph of Tomi working on the Girl’s Day set for her daughter, Terry, while at Santa Anita. The original set was donated to JANM.
