The handmade Hinamatsuri set was created by Tomi Kusumi for the March 3, 1943 Girl’s Day at the Amache concentration camp. When faced with forced removal to Santa Anita in 1942, Tomi carried with her crochet yarn among the few possessions she was permitted to take. A teacher of a crocheting class at Santa Anita Assembly Center and later at Amache, Colorado. Tomi Kusumi made the Girl’s Day set for her daughter, Terry, who donated the original set, pictured here in full color. Tomi made this set at Santa Anita.
