Maryka Omatsu was appointed to the Ontario Court of Justice in 1993. It was a time when the Canadian judiciary was composed of few women and even fewer minorities, and she became the first woman of East Asian heritage to be appointed to any Canadian court. Prior to her appointment she was a lawyer for 16 years, practicing human rights, environmental, and criminal law.
