BEGIN:VCALENDAR VERSION:2.0 PRODID:-//PYVOBJECT//NONSGML Version 1//EN BEGIN:VEVENT UID:events.uid.5525@www.discovernikkei.org DTSTART:20180323T000000Z DTEND:20180325T000000Z DESCRIPTION:<strong>Ukwanshin Kabudan</strong> and the <strong>Ka Haka ʻUl a o Keʻelikōlani Center for Hawai&lsquo\;ian Language</strong> invite me mbers of Okinawan communities in the U.S. and across the world to attend t he <strong>2018 LooChoo (Ryūkyū) Identity Summit: &ldquo\;Sustaining the Breath of Our Native Languages.&rdquo\;</strong> The three-day conference will take place <strong>March 23 &ndash\; 25</strong> at the <strong>Univ ersity of Hawai&lsquo\;i at Hilo\, Hawai&lsquo\;i Island.</strong> Early r egistration is open until March 1.\n\n<em>&ldquo\;E Ala E!&rdquo\;</em> is the Hawai&lsquo\;ian call to wake up\, just like the rising of the sun. < em>&ldquo\;Kataibusan&rdquo\;</em> meaning to want to speak (in the native Okinawan language). In this fourth LooChoo Identity conference\, we are s o honored to be in a space that is known internationally for language revi talization and incorporating the culture and values while never forgetting the roots. We will discuss how we will move on to pass on our Island Lang uages of LooChoo/Okinawa and what it means to us. We will look at how we c an prepare for the generations to come after us\, so our language can surv ive with our culture and traditions that have been passed down to us from our ancestors. The early registration fee is $100 for adults\, $75 for students. <strong>The deadline is March 1\, 2018\; the fee will increase $25 thereafter.</strong> An optional pre-summit study tour of Hawai&lsquo\ ;i Island is also available.\n\n<strong>Ukwanshin Kabudan</strong> is a no n-profit\, LooChoo (Ryūkyū) performing arts troupe based in Honolulu. Th e purpose of this organization is to maintain the traditional music\, danc e\, and cultural art forms while fostering goodwill and understanding thro ugh sharing. Ukwanshin also participates in educational programs to promot e cultural awareness. Regular workshops on LooChoo culture\, history\, mus ic\, dance\, and language are held on O&lsquo\;ahu\, Maui\, and Hawai&lsqu o\;i Island.
