Ar mstrong Theatre</strong> in Torrance. Entitled &ldquo\;Hibiki Wataru (The Journey of Sound)\,&rdquo\; this concert will explore centuries of Okinawa n performing arts with a focus on the koto\, a 13-stringed zither. Other O kinawan traditional instruments including the sanshin (a snake-skinned lut e)\, kucho (a bowed instrument)\, fwanso (a transverse flute)\, and 2-piec e taiko set (drums) will be played with the koto. Okinawan buyō (traditio nal dance)\, characterized by its graceful movements and vibrant costumes\ , will accompany select pieces of music.\n\nThis program provides a wonder ful opportunity to see <strong>17 master musicians and dancers traveling f rom Okinawa including Chōichi Terukina\, a National Living Treasure of Ja pan</strong>. Special guest artists from Hawaii will also join local music ians. <strong>Ritsuko Ashimine</strong>\, a celebrated journalist and pers onality in Okinawa\, will co-emcee the event with <strong>Joseph Jones</st rong> of the school of dance Tamagusuku Ryu Kansen- Kai Yonamine Keiko Ryu bu Dojo. In addition to music and dance\, there will be a <strong>fashion show featuring traditional costumes from the Ryukyu Kingdom</strong>!\n\nT he Kōyōkai L.A. was established in 1964 under the guidance of Miyo Miyag i (president) and Sachiko Kakazu (vice president) to preserve and perpetua te classical koto music of Okinawa. Over the years\, the Kōyōkai members hip has grown to over 50 koto musicians with several musicians achieving t he status of kyoshi (teaching certification) and 7 achieving the highest r ank of shihan (master certification).
