In anticipation of his project Grand Japan Theater's first performance at Carnegie Hall on March 1st, An Evening of Japanese Traditional Theatre, Ebizo Ichikawa XI, takes the stage at Japan Society for a conversation about his career and the traditions of kabuki theater. Known as the “prince of kabuki,” Ebizo began his training at the age of five, and has appeared on television and in films as well as on kabuki stages both in Japan and abroad. The eleventh holder of the Ebizo name, he is heir to the Ichikawa clan of actors, which traces its lineage back to the famous Danjuro I in the late 17th century. Ebizo will be joined by hayashikata(kabuki musician) Denjiro Tanaka VII, and other kabuki performers for the discussion. The program will also include an on-stage demonstration of kabuki makeup application.
Moderated by Dr. Samuel Leiter, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Theatre, Brooklyn College and The Graduate Center, CUNY.
