In memory of the Japanese and Japanese Americans detained in Hawai‘i during World War II, join the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai‘i, Japanese American Citizens League - Honolulu Chapter, and the Honolulu Japanese Junior Chamber of Commerce in a time of remembrance and reflection.

February 19 is commemorated as a Day of Remembrance by Japanese American communities across the nation in recognition of Executive Order 9066, signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1942. The presidential order gave way to the exclusion, eviction, and imprisonment of persons of Japanese ancestry living on the west coast and the selective roundup and detention of persons of Japanese ancestry living in Hawai‘i.

Hawai‘i’s Day of Remembrance will explore the lessons of the Japanese internment from the perspective of an educator, civil rights advocate, legislator and high school student. The classroom adaptation of documentary, The Untold Story: Internment of Japanese Americans in Hawai‘i, will premiere and a candle lighting ceremony honoring the memory of Hawai‘i’s former internees will close the formal program.

Admission is free and open to the public. For more information, please check our website www.jcch.com or call (808) 945-7633.
