In remembrance of the 68th Anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor (December 7, 1941), Kapolei Public Library will host “Dark Clouds over Paradise: the Hawaii Internees Story,” an exhibit presented by the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii. The exhibit will be on display from December 1 – 19 in the 2nd floor Lobby and can be viewed during regular library hours. Shortly after the Pearl Harbor attack, approximately 10,000 people living in the Hawaiian Islands were investigated for security reasons. The investigations resulted in the apprehension of 1,569 people, of which 1,466 were of Japanese ancestry. The exhibit, sponsored by the Friends of the Library, Kapolei, reveals how these Hawaii internees, who were mostly immigrant leaders in the local Japanese community, were forced into camps.
