Mochiz uki met with dozens of Nisei and Sansei (second and third generation) Japa nese Canadians whose parents and grandparents had owned or worked on agric ultural farms across the Fraser Valley. These sites included Strawberry Hi ll/Surrey\, Mission\, Haney\, Langley\, and Maple Ridge. Combining archiva l research with these collected stories of farm life\, Autumn Strawbe rry weaves together a series of short vignettes imagined through a 6 0 minute hand-painted and digital animation projected onto the Gallery’s walls and screens. Visitors will see life on these farms—women pickling \, children polishing chicken eggs\, and men picking berries. Mochizuki co mbines real with imagined characters and storylines in keeping with her ar t practice of historical re-creation.\n\nIn addition to the large-scale pr ojections\, sculptural tree stumps and pieces of barn flats are scattered throughout the Gallery floor. You're invited to peek inside and watch ani mations on smaller projections that move from everyday farm life to a crea turely\, future world of trees and lively insects. The trees’ ghostly pr esence recalls the “dream of riches” that motivated many Isseis (first generation Japanese immigrants) to come to Canada\, while also bringing t o light the harsh reality of their participation in deforestation processe s (tree stumping) to clear the land so they could plant their berry fields . These farms would later lie abandoned and then sold to support the const ruction of their internment camps during WWII when the government forcibly removed Japanese Canadians from the west coast of British Columbia.\n\nPr e-book an exhi bition visit by emailing artga llery@surrey.ca or calling us at 604-501-5566 (press 1).\n\nhttps://w ww.youtube.com/watch?v=cQV10L721f8&amp\;t=51s DTSTAMP:20240418T143504Z SUMMARY:BC Art: Cindy Mochizuki: Autumn Strawberry URL:/en/events/2021/06/26/bc-art-cindy-mochizuki-autumn-strawberry/ END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
