  New Year holiday at Japan Society's annual&nbsp\;<strong><em>Oshogatsu</e
 m>&nbsp\;</strong>event and participate in various traditional activities.
  Families watch live taiko drumming and accompanying lion dancing (<em>shi
 shi-mai</em>) and have the chance to participate in a brief taiko practice
  session at either 2 or 3 pm (session is chosen at time of ticket purchase
 ). Other fun activities include rice pounding (<em>mochi-tsuki</em>)\, cal
 ligraphy (<em>kakizome</em>)\, kite (<em>tako</em>)-making\, traditional g
 ames (<em>fukuwarai</em>)\, and top spinning (<em>koma-mawashi</em>).&nbsp
