Bainbridge Island Bus Tour (2013 JANM National Conference - Bainbridge Island Bus Tour)

Journey through history as you discover the Japanese American experience on Bainbridge Island. The tour bus will take the ferry from Seattle to Bainbridge Island where local Islanders will lead the tour to five key Island landmarks—Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial, Bainbridge Gardens, Suyematsu Farm, Woodward Middle School, and Sonoji Sakai Intermediate School.

The Bainbridge Island Bus Tour has been organized by: Bainbridge Island Japanese American Community (BIJAC); Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial Association (BIJAEMA); Bainbridge Island Historical Museum; Bainbridge Island School District—Sakai Intermediate School and Woodward Middle School; Bainbridge Gardens; Global Source Education; Suyematsu Farm; and Town & Country Markets.

For more than 25 years, fans around the world have been enjoying Stan Sakai’s Usagi Yojimbo . Usagi Yojimbo is inspired by the historical figure Miyamoto Musashi from seventeenth-century feudal Japan. Through Usagi, people of all ages have engaged with and become passionate about Japanese history and their own cultural heritage. This lively, interactive session will feature author and artist Stan Sakai discussing the stories behind Usagi Yojimbo and his current project, The 47 Ronin  for Dark Horse Comics.

Japanese American Redress (For Teens) (2013 JANM National Conference - Mitchell T. Maki at Japanese American Redress (For Teens) workshop)

The passage of the Civil Liberties Act of 1988 provided a presidential apology and monetary redress payments to Americans affected by Executive Order 9066. How this legislation was created, fought for, and ultimately passed is the critical second half of the World War II experience for Japanese Americans. The story is told in a way that is understandable and inspirational to young people (grades 7 to 12) as they learn that the fight for redress is more than a great Japanese American story—it is a great American story.

Welcome Remarks (Transcription):  

Good afternoon.   

It is with distinct honor that I stand in front of the distinguished participants of the 4th National Conference of the Japanese American National Museum. I wish to humbly express my sincere appreciation and deep respect to all of you for your open-mindedness and forward looking spirit in understanding Japanese culture and recognizing the virtues we commonly share, and for graciously inviting me to this podium as a representative of the People and the Government of Japan. We are honored to be associated with the conscience and strength of the Japanese-American community.

Yesterday, on the 4th of July, I had the privilege of witnessing your great nation, the United States of America, the land of the free and the home of the brave, celebrate its dynamic diversity. At the Naturalization Ceremony held at the Seattle Center under the blue sky of the beautiful Emerald City of the fascinating Evergreen State, I came across a famous phrase, "Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty".

This is exactly what this conference has been doing.  Through your tireless efforts to preserve and share the Japanese American experience, the Conference teaches us how past lessons are relevant to the present day. It transcends time and space, connecting past and present, young and old, communities and peoples. It embodies the importance of freedom and justice for all.  It exemplifies the significance of peace and democracy. It resonates with universal values, which are applicable to the people of all nations.

I wish you a meaningful participation in the Conference and I look forward to learning an abundance alongside you.

In 1981 Japanese Americans spoke out for redress at the Commission on Wartime Relocation and Interment of Civilians (CWRIC) hearings in Los Angeles. Preserved by Nikkei for Civil Rights & Redress (NCRR) and Visual Communications, these testimonies galvanized a grassroots campaign, resulting in the signing of the Civil Liberties Act of 1988. Panelists from NCRR discuss these video clips and invite testifiers, especially from Seattle, to share their experiences.

Fiction—and even nonfiction—can misrepresent Nikkei history; Nikkei writing can also present history in ways that interpret the story for a greater understanding of its subjects. [Audio] In My Parents' Words: Voices from Department of Justice Camps (2013 JANM National Conference - In My Parents' Words: Voices from Department of Justice Camps [AUDIO])

Prohibited by law from becoming naturalized U.S. citizens, select Issei were the first to be confined in Department of Justice camps following Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor. In addition, Nisei and Kibei who later renounced their American citizenship were removed to Department of Justice camps. Deemed enemy aliens, they were eventually deported to Japan. During this panel sons and daughters share their parents’ internment experiences through the written documents they left behind.

In 2010 the Tokyo Broadcasting System (TBS) broadcast a dramatic miniseries, 99 Years of Love: Japanese Americans, the story of the Hiramatsu family and its enduring family love in the face of bitter struggles with anti-Japanese exclusion and World War II within the United States and Japan. This panel discusses the larger historical context of the series and its impact upon the Japanese and their reaction to Japanese American history.

[Audio] The Tule Lake Segregation Center: Its History and Significance (2013 JANM National Conference - The Tule Lake Segregation Center: Its History and Significance [AUDIO])

In fall 1943, more than 10 percent of the unjustly confined Nikkei population was imprisoned in the maximum security Tule Lake Segregation Center, a consequence of their refusal to give unqualified affirmation to two so-called loyalty questions. This nonviolent protest, defined as disloyalty by the U.S. government, has been virtually erased from the Japanese American narrative for the past 70 years. Hear from three Nisei survivors who resisted their government’s demand to show unquestioned “patriotic” compliance in the face of being stripped of their rights, freedom, and dignity.
