What's in a Name

Sid Okazaki

I was born Masashi Okazaki in 1925. Before World War II, I was known as “Mas” but in camp I was “Sid”. Taken from a band master in high school who had unkept hair (like me) so my group of friends teased me and the name stuck. I can tell by my friends, by them (before and after camp) when graduating junior high, my school principal butchered my name when handing out my diploma. The principal came out with “Makaki Ohkakae”. Who? I have added “Sid” on my birth certificate later.
