Toshio Miyamoto

"Mr. Miyamoto is kibei—he was born in Hawai‘i but went back to Japan when he was three years old. He did
not come back to Hawai‘i until he was 16 and did not speak English. He eventually went to a Catholic school in Lahaina where the sisters took care of him and taught him English. He is a 100th Infantry Battalion veteran who was twice injured during the war. I just thought that a graphic way of illustrating his bicultural past would be to photograph him with these two flags."
