Sumie Ushijima

"When I drove by this small barber shop on Kilauea Avenue in Hilo, I was instantly attracted to it and instinctively thought I would find a Nisei inside. I went in to the shop and it was like walking into a different time period. I introduced myself to the Nisei barber, Sumie, who surprisingly was willing to be photographed by a complete stranger. The Ushijima Barber closed down in 2005."
