写真花嫁と二世誕生

1908年の紳士協定によって、新規の日本人契約移民の渡米が禁止されましたが、すでに国内に在住している一世の配偶者の入国者の入国は可能でした。そのため、以後、1924年に新規日本人移民の入国が完全に禁止されるまで、多くの女性らが新しい機会を求め渡米し、アメリカで新しい家庭を築きました。

1910—30年代、アメリカ生まれの二世が増加。1940年（昭和15年）頃には日系人の60％を占めるようになりました。

＊＊＊＊写真花嫁とは？＊＊＊＊

すでに渡米していた一世の多くは、日本にいる女性と写真を交換し、自らの花嫁を探しました。その結果、多くの女性らが、新しい機会を求め、写真交換した男性と日本で籍を入れた後に渡米しました。これが、一般に「写真花嫁」と呼ばれる女性たちです。
