The start of World War II and the E.O. 9066 evacuation led to the Gardena Baptist Church being disbursed and forced to leave the church buildings at 164O0 Dalton Avenue. The ministry to the congregation continued from the LABCMS. Dr. Ralph Mayberry, LABCMS's Executive Minister 1937-1956, drove to the Internment Camp at Poston ln Arizona in 1943. After preaching at church in the camp, Dr. Mayberry drove Paul and Jitsuo Morikawa to Phoenix so that Paul could be ordained. Paul became Rev. Paul and he continued to minister to the church members at Poston.
