The Sons and Daughters of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team


The Sons and Daughters of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team is a chapter of the 442nd Veterans Club. This chapter was established in 1993 with the mission of educating others about the soldiers who fought in the 442nd Combat Unit. Members express their gratitude by providing support to veterans. Various military activities and functions include the annual 442 Veterans Anniversary Banquet, as well as the annual Joint Memorial Services at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl. The Sons and Daughters of the 442nd RCT Chapter is expanding its membership to include the children and grandchildren of the 442nd Unit soliders, as well as to others desiring to preserve the 442nd RCT's decorated legacy.

Bertram Akira Tsunematsu was born in Waialua, O‘ahu, on Dec. 12, 1915. He was the eldest of three children of Masao and Hatsune (Uramoto) Tsunematsu, who emigrated from Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan. Masao arrived in December 1907 on the Siberia Maru. Hatsune arrived on the Tenyo Maru in 1914, and soon after arriving she and Masao were married at the U.S. Immigration Station in Honolulu. Thomas Takashi Nakahara

Thomas Takashi Nakahara was born on February 16, 1923, in Pa‘auilo on the Big Island. His parents, Minezo and Kiyo (Kawamoto) Nakahara, arrived from Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan, in 1894 and 1907, respectively. Minezo founded the first Japanese language school in Hawai’i – at Hakalau, where he also helped establish the Jodo Mission. There were four sons and four daughters in the family. Nakahara registered for the draft on June 30, 1942. He worked at Kohala’s Union Mill and his father’s grocery store …

2nd Battalion, Headquarters Company Ninety-nine years ago, on January 3, 1924, Asa Asami Higuchi was born in Honolulu to Sadami and Chie (Matsushita) Higuchi, who emigrated from Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan in 1910 and 1914, respectively. Sadami worked for the OR&L Company and later retired as a gardener from Mid-Pacific Institute. Asami (or “Ace” as he was known) attended McKinley High School and graduated in 1942.
