Old Age Has Its Charms

comments

Old age can be a time for new experiences

One behavior that I notice is currently occurring in a positive way is the intense participation of senior citizens in environments commonly frequented by younger people (let’s say between 30 and 50 years old), in places such as shopping malls, supermarkets, restaurants, gyms, and music events. Nowadays, it is normal to come across senior couples or groups of friends of the same age in the bakeries and coffee shops we frequent, in lively, unhurried chats, washed down with delicious macchiatos and cappuccinos.

It is also possible to notice a significant transformation in the way society views old age. Much more than a period of rest after a long life of work, this phase of life has come to be seen as a much-awaited moment of new opportunities and discoveries. Breaking with the traditional patterns that saw the elderly as a group restricted to a life of tranquility, but in a certain way isolated, today, many are adopting a vibrant and active lifestyle, full of pleasant surprises and social interactions. Far from conforming to the stereotypes that surround old age, many elderly people are professionals—civil servants, teachers, engineers, lawyers, businessmen—all well retired and in perfect shape, who seek to enjoy this moment of life in a pleasant way and without existential conflicts. This new lifestyle has allowed many to rediscover themselves and spend unforgettable moments with new friends.

By the way, I would like to cite as an example of this new reality the admirable work of a couple of friends, both Nikkei and senior citizens, who, through their tourism company focused especially on the significant Japanese-Brazilian community, have, over the years, been making many people's dreams come true by organizing unforgettable trips and tours. With a human and passionate understanding of the needs of these groups, their agency does not only provide tour packages, but also unforgettable moments and experiences that promote social interaction, strengthening bonds and loyalty. It allows people, particularly retirees, to use the free time that they have today with personalized excursions, with professional services and first-class care, taking the privileged participants to explore the beauty of Brazil and discover the fascination of international travel around the world. In the company of people with similar affinities—social, cultural, economic—and who share similar life stories.

These cultural-tourist experiences provide a valuable opportunity to challenge age-old prejudices about the capacity for learning in old age. Every museum visited, every typical dish tried is a new life lesson that shows that curiosity has no age limits. Immersing oneself in new cultures, while forming a strong network of friends, allows these travelers not only to rediscover themselves, but also to deconstruct society’s view of what it means to be elderly.

With the growing participation of senior citizens in travel and excursions, a silent revolution in tourism is taking place. These travelers, many of whom have a rich and diverse professional background, are not only seeking exotic locations, but also validating their existence through shared experiences. The Nikkei couple who decided to invest in this niche are a perfect example of this revolution: their travel agency has become a portal not only for adventures, but for building a new culture among retirees, where joy and discovery go beyond simply traveling.

Group travel also creates opportunities to practice skills that may have been dormant, such as communication, empathy, and teamwork. Group meetings can result in collective projects, such as creating travel blogs, where travelers share experiences and tips with other travelers, and forming tanomoshi groups, a type of financial consortium that is very popular among older Japanese people. This form of engagement not only provides a sense of belonging and usefulness, but also a form of social encounter that persists even after the trip, through periodic meetings and events, such as lunches and dinners.

Group trips make it easier to learn about new cultures and ways of life, allowing group members to broaden their horizons and experience unique experiences. Lunches in traditional restaurants, visits to museums and outdoor excursions are just some of the activities that enrich trips. It is not uncommon for participants to feel like part of a large family at the end of each trip, building a legacy of friendship and companionship that will last long after they return home. “See you next time! I hope it won’t be too long!” are common expressions when saying goodbye to each trip.

In short, old age is a period rich in discoveries and new experiences, and group travel has become one of the best ways to enjoy it. By breaking the stigmas associated with life after retirement, these new travelers are showing that age is not a limit, but rather an invitation to venture into new scenarios. In a world where time is a precious commodity, celebrating life through memorable experiences is, without a doubt, a way to transform what could be boredom into pure joy and continuous learning.
