COPANI 2015!!! WARMING UP!! The surprising Dominican Republic

What do you, dear reader, imagine when you think of the Dominican Republic? Of course, the natural beauty of its beaches, the majestic blue sea and its white sand, among other tourist attractions. But the country has much more to offer than beautiful landscapes.

On my first visit there, in September, I was able to see how friendly this place is. In fact, what impressed me most was the friendliness of the Dominican people. A warm welcome that makes us feel at home.

The Nikkei community, in this regard, is no different. In addition to being very receptive and interested in cultivating friendships, they are united to hold an important event next year: COPANI 2015 (Pan American Nikkei Convention), something audacious if we think about a community with just over 1,000 people. Preparations have now begun – with a meeting on September 13th with delegations of Nikkei from the Americas, to which I had the privilege of being invited – and are already in full swing, with the constitution of a local committee. Compact, yes, however, with a lot of desire to learn and create an event on par with the other countries that have already hosted the meeting.

Together with the Brazilian delegation, I participated in a cultural event, “Bon Odori”, held at Nihongako (Japanese school). The feeling is the same as Nikkei events around the world, with lots of Japanese food and traditional cultural presentations. It was interesting to note the large presence of non-Nikkei, who were super participative and interested in Japanese culture. Everyone eating yakitori , yakissoba and taking the risk of dancing odori .... We noticed that this interest is something very strong internationally - not just in Brazil. Japanese culture is in evidence.

It was a great feeling that, after spending a short time with the Dominican Nikkei, we returned with the feeling of having known each other for a long time. I'm sure that's a (great) feeling.

Event organizers – Motivated team

For next year's convention, expectations are high. The host city will be the Dominican capital, Santo Domingo. Currently, it has a great infrastructure to welcome all participants, with options for the most varied tastes; commercial areas and large shopping malls with international brands, contrasting with a beautiful colonial center. It is worth recording this rich history here, as the city was the first in America. There, of course, there is nothing to say about the exuberant nature, with its incredible beaches and green areas.

Anyway, this was a small sample of what can be expected from next year at COPANI. I'm sure it will be one of the best conventions that have ever taken place and I expect large delegations from member countries. After all, being welcomed with open arms and having contact with feelings of unity and harmony will make more people fall in love with this country and its people.
