Shadows of the Past : Remembering Japanese Incarceration

The upcoming installation exhibit at California Baptist University’s Rose Garden Chapel, running from March 31 to April 4, is more than just an art display—it is a deeply personal tribute to a painful history that has shaped my family and so many others. The opening reception at 6 PM will mark the beginning of an immersive experience that blends art and history, transporting visitors into the lives of those who endured internment during World War II.

Through detailed paintings, custom-designed stamps, replica identification tags, and historical documents, this exhibit brings to life the devastating impact of Executive Order 9066, which forcibly incarcerated thousands of Japanese Americans. Walking through recreated barracks and witnessing these visual narratives, attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the resilience and hardships faced by families like mine.

For me, this project is not just about preserving history—it is about honoring my ancestors and ensuring that their struggles are not forgotten. It is about fostering conversations, challenging prejudice, and recognizing how fear and discrimination continue to shape our world today. My hope is that this exhibit will serve as both a remembrance and a call to awareness, inspiring reflection and empathy for generations to come.
