"Rebel With A Cause: The Life of Aiko Herzig Yoshinaga"

Film & Other Media
In Person
Gardena Valley Japanese Cultural Institute
1964 West 162nd Street Gardena, California, United States of America

Date: Oct. 14, 2017

Time: 2 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Documentary about the life and times of civil rights activist Aiko Herzig Yoshinaga.  Since Yoshinaga spent much of her working career in New York, the documentary offers an unprecedented, rarely seen glimpse of the Japanese American community there.  Of course, her story would not be complete
without her contribution to the redress effort.  Aiko played a crucial role by discovering critical evidence of premeditated governmental misconduct during the war, and making it available to multiple groups of activists. Her expertise and findings provided much of the documentary evidence that formed the basis of
the landmark 1987 coram nobis cases of Gordon Hirabayashi, Fred Koramatsu, and Minoru Yasui; and the National Council for Japanese Americans
Redress (NCJAR) lawsuit of 1983. Anchored by the unique friendship between Yoshinaga and the director's own mother, "Rebel With a Cause" offers an intimate portrait of an unassuming woman and her impact on a national movement.  FREE event, but please be sure to RSVP with the GVJCI at (310) 324-6611 or info@jci-gardena.org.
