In Person
Japanese American Museum of San Jose
535 N. Fifth street San Jose, California, United States of America

Many Japanese Americans today trace their roots to migrant laborers from Okinawa. But did you know many of these Okinawan immigrants to the mainland U.S. and Hawaii might not have even considered themselves to be Japanese? In fact, for most of the nineteenth century, Okinawa was the independent Ryukyu Kingdom before being colonized and annexed by Japan. Come learn about some of the unique intersections and divergences of Okinawan American history and culture!
