The Day of Remembrance is an annual commemoration sponsored by the Portland JACL of President Franklin D. Roosevelt signing Executive Order 9066, which sent over 120,000 Americans of Japanese ancestry to American concentration camps. The year 2013 is significant because it is the 25th anniversary of the passage of the Civil Liberties Act of 1988 providing a Presidential apology and redress for lost liberty and property.
The program this year will include a panel discussion of the Civil Liberties Act of 1988 and other legal challenges to the forced removal from the West Coast, the role of the National JACL and Portland JACL in the Redress effort, and current threats to civil liberties contained in the National Defense Authorization Act.
