Special Exhibition: Henry Sugimoto and His Times

Exhibition
In Person
和歌山市立博物館 2階 特別展示室
湊本町3丁目2番地 Japan

Date: Oct. 20, 2012 – Nov. 25, 2012

Henry Sugimoto was born in Minato Village, Kaiso District, Wakayama Prefecture (now Minato, Wakayama City) in 1900, and at the age of 19, he moved to the United States where his parents lived. In 1941, just as he was beginning to achieve success as an artist, Japan and the United States began their war. As a result, Sugimoto ended up living in an internment camp for Japanese Americans. As an artist, he continued to paint the life there. After the war, these works by Sugimoto were valued as valuable paintings that recorded history. His paintings were a major factor in making the U.S. government, which values freedom and equality, confirm its unjust policies toward Japanese Americans. It has been 70 years since Henry Sugimoto was forced into an internment camp for Japanese Americans. This exhibition will feature his paintings on the theme of the internment camp. We will also trace the history of American immigration in Wakayama while following the life of Henry Sugimoto. Period: October 20th to November 25th (closed on Mondays) Venue: Wakayama City Museum, 2nd floor, Special Exhibition Room http://www.wakayama-city-museum.jp/ 3-2 Minatohonmachi, Wakayama City, 640-8222 Tel: 073-423-0003 Admission fee: Adults and university students: 500 yen, high school students and younger: 100 yen *Free for holders of a Wakayama City senior citizen discount coupon *20% discount for groups (20 or more people) *Free for elementary, junior high and high school students every Saturday *Free on November 17th (Sat) and 18th (Sun) in commemoration of Kansai Culture Day
