“Kapoho: Memoir of a Modern Pompeii” by Frances Kakugawa is a collection of short stories by a Japanese Hawaiian who was just five years old at the time, but whose memory and recall of details is amazing and provides deep insight into not only the suspicions cast upon the Japanese American community, but of the small Hawaiian village she grew up in that was covered in a 1960 eruption.

It’s the author’s 10th book (four poetry books between 1970 and 1976 and since 2002 six about children, caregiving, and Alzheimer’s).
Kakugawa immortalizes many of those she knew in Kapoho (35 minutes south of Hilo on the Big Island) of less than a thousand
